LAMP-Kinship Office has moved!

We are excited to announce that LAMP-Kinship has a new home!  We have relocated our office to the Litchfield United Methodist Church.  The church is right next to Lake Ripley Elementary School at 1000 South Sibley Avenue, and our office is on the south end of the church.  Just look for the LAMP-Kinship signs to locate the entrance.
As we make this move, we want to thank Dr. Terrence Tancabel, Dr. Katie Tancabel, and the team at the Litchfield Eye Center.  They have generously allowed our program to use space within their building and utiltiies since 2008, at an extremely reduced rate.  Their support has made a huge impact on LAMP’s ability to serve area youth.  If you see them or stop into the Litchfield Eye Center, please thank them for their generosity and support!
We also want to thank the Litchfield United Methodist Church, Pastor Bill Kerr, and the LUMC Leadership Council for welcoming us into their church space!  They are also generously donating the office space to LAMP-Kinship, which is an extension of the many ways they serve our community.
Please be patient with us as we make this transition.  Our phone number, email, and post office box will remain the same.  Parking for the new office will be in the back of the church in the parking lot.  Please contact LAMP staff with any questions by calling 320-699-1616.

LAMP-Kinship Match Highlight

Cheryl &

The Litchfield Area Mentorship Program-Kinship is proud to honor Cheryl Whitchurch and Aniya this month as our newest Match Highlight. Aniya and Cheryl have been sharing experiences for a little over 2 years, and their relationship is a true win-win situation. Together they learn from each other, have fun, and grow.

When Cheryl first met Aniya she was very withdrawn and shy. She had difficulty asking for what she needed or wanted. Aniya is now more comfortable with new activities and she is becoming more confident in herself. She has now joined a children’s church choir on her own and has even climbed to the top of the rock wall!

Cheryl and Aniya both think that their relationship is especially unique. Prior to being matched, they had begun a relationship in a different context. Cheryl was Aniya’s third grade teacher. They would both say they were ecstatic when they found out they were to be matched together through LAMP. They enjoy their own traditions like going for ice cream or pizza. They also enjoy visiting the residents at Ecumen together, going to the movies, playing with Lucy the dog, and going for walks. Cheryl said, “Aniya is very compassionate and is able to communicate very effectively with the elderly. Older adults recognize her compassion and beauty and love her in return.” They have also enjoyed many LAMP group activities together over the past two years. The group activities have allowed for growth and exploration in new skills and interests.

What brought Cheryl to LAMP is her love for children’s enthusiasm and energy. She wanted to find a meaningful way to stay connected with youth activities in the community after her own children were grown. Cheryl also commented that she believes LAMP-Kinship is an exemplary resource to our community, and she is honored to be able to support our local program.

LAMP has given Cheryl and Aniya the opportunity to continue their relationship long-term. Aniya’s mom said that the best part of participating in LAMP has been watching Aniya blossom and learn that being herself is perfect. She also added that LAMP has helped with initiating friendships, helped Aniya realize how beautiful she is, and given her opportunities to step out of her comfort zone with LAMP group activities. Cheryl said being a mentor or mentee is an opportunity to give to the other, and give-give opportunities are always meaningful. When Aniya was asked what her favorite part of being matched with Cheryl was, she simply answered, “She cares about me, and I have fun doing whatever she has planned.”

LAMP-Kinship is proud and thankful to have such outstanding youth and mentors involved in our program. Thank you Cheryl and Aniya for all you add to our program and community!

September Group Event: Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center

I wanted to share some about our amazing day at Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center! What an awesome and beautiful place! Thank you to the wonderful staff at Prairie Woods, and thank you to PACT for Families Collaborative for awarding LAMP-Kinship with a discretionary grant for the trip!!  Thank you also to the Meeker County Emergency Food Shelf for providing our lunch through our grant, and also to Econofoods for donating our breakfast in the morning!
We got to try a really cool initiative game to get things going with some team work.  Then we headed over to the flying squirrel.  The flying squirrel requires one person to get in a harness, and then there is a team of balayers on the other end who pull you up to 40 feet in the air!  People could choose to go up slow, medium, or fast.  They could also choose how high they wanted to go up, and had the option to swing as well.  What a blast!  We got to practice communicating with the balay line, making choices for challenging yourself, and also trusting others that they will do what you ask.  After the flying squirrel, we got to go over to the climbing wall tower.  This was a lot of fun as well!  We had lots of our youth set a goal for themselves and reach or exceed their goal!  Our youth did an amazing job challenging themselves and encouraging others! Way To Go!!! Look at all you are able to accomplish!  You should be very proud of yourselves!
Again, thank you so much to Steve and Cameron, the staff at Prairie Woods!  They made the day so much fun and very safe.  Thank you also to all of our mentors and parents who came along.  You all set such great examples for these young people, and the trip would not have been possible without you.  Thank you to Hicks Bus Line as well for our safe transportation to and from this event.
I would definitely recommend Prairie Woods for any group to experience!

August Group Event: Back to School Kick-Off Party!

August Group Event:
Back to School Kick-Off Party
In August we were able to have a Back to School Party thanks to our grant from the Litchfield Area Community Foundation and Southwest Initiative Foundation!  We had twenty youth and mentors come for the event, and we all had a lot of fun!  We tried some team-building games and activities, along with Catch Phrase and Back to School Pictionary.  In groups we also brainstormed back to school tips for having a successful year, had a building competition with marshmallows and spaghetti noodles, and exercised our brains using our 4-H Rube Goldberg machines.  Our prizes consisted of three backpacks and lots of great school supplies to help get our LAMP youth prepared for school.  We also enjoyed pizza, veggies, and cookies thanks to our grant from the Meeker County Emergency Food Shelf.

July Group Activities: 4-H Activities & Team-building and Game Night at Ecumen

LAMP-Kinship held two group events in July. The first
activity was an afternoon at LAMP to enjoy 4-H
experiments and team-building activities. We tried to
make slushies with rock salt, ice, and Kool Aid; a few of
them worked and a few flopped. We also made paint,
snow dough, and a great big mess! It was a blast! For
the team-building activities we worked together to flip a
blanket over while standing on it, we attempted a hula
hoop circle, and partnered up for some powdered donut
fun. We sure have some smart LAMP youth, because they
breezed through every challenge I gave them as a team.
Great job everyone! There were seven of us that hung
out for the afternoon, and there was a lot of laughing and
silliness! Our thanks to Darcy Cole and Hannah Barrick for
developing the creative, educational activities, and also
to Darcy for stopping by to share about 4-H opportunities
for our youth. Thanks to all who came!

The second group activity we took part in was a game
night at Ecumen with the residents there. This event was
a lot of fun as well. We had about 25 people come to
enjoy some bingo, prizes, and good company. Thanks to
Julie Kadelbach and all the residents of Ecumen who made
the time to come to share in this activity with our youth
and mentors. Also, thank you to Marsha Goraczkwoski for
entertaining us all with piano music. A big thanks to the
Salvation Army Service Extension Unit for supporting this
intergenerational event! Thanks to their support we were
able to provide lots of fun bingo prizes, along with treats
and beverages. Thank you to everyone who attended and
made the event so much fun!
